Leg Ties and Knee Garters
LEGTIES AND KNEE GARTERS CLOTH AND WAMPUM
Legties or knee garters, as they were often called, were used by the Native Americans and adopted by the people of the frontier. They serve a practical use as well as being decroative. The garters held leggings in place and supported the kneecap. A misstep in rough terrian could easily dislocate the knee. In the wilderness a dislocated knee was not only crippling but could be a death sentence.
The wampum used in these graters is trade wampum. By 1650 the demand for traditional shell wampum had begun to outstrip the supple. Glass or porciline trade wampum was first intoduced by the Dutch in New York. By 1750 glass trade wampum had become a staple in the fur trade.
